This isn’t your average history lesson! The Rewi Alley Treasure Hunt is a real-life quest that takes you on a self-guided walking tour around Christchurch’s city centre. It’s the perfect activity for curious kids and families who love a good challenge.

Your Adventure Checklist

1. Get your map: Download and print your free Rewi Alley Treasure Hunt map. 

2. Head to the starting point: Your journey begins at the Christchurch Arts Centre (Te Matatiki Toi Ora The Arts Centre)

3. Follow the clues: Use the map to navigate to different landmarks around the city.

4. Solve and learn: Answer the questions at each stop to uncover the secrets of Rewi’s amazing life.

5. Become a History Hero: Complete the hunt and become an expert on this New Zealand legend!

Who Was Rewi Alley?

Rewi Alley was a child who once lived Canterbury, just like you might be! He went on an incredible adventure to China and spent 60 years helping people, building schools, and making friends. He even came up with the famous phrase “Gung Ho,” which means “Work Together!” This treasure hunt helps you walk in his footsteps and discover where his amazing story began.

The Rewi Alley Treasure Hunt is a free, fun-filled activity for the whole family. It’s a great way to explore Christchurch, learn something new, and complete a Children’s University challenge.

This is an approved Children’s University programme. Complete the treasure hunt and have your passport stamped at Tūranga (the Central City public library in Christchurch, 60 Cathedral Square).

This activity is perfect for rainy days in Christchurch

It’s a scavenger hunt, it’s a puzzle game, and it’s a time-traveling adventure—all rolled into one! Your mission: race through clues, crack codes, and uncover fascinating facts about Rewi Alley’s journey from New Zealand to China.

This activity may require you to visit the Rewi Alley Museum located at 159 Oxford Terrace, Christchurch, and definitely visit the Tūranga Library at 60 Cathedral Square, Christchurch. 

Remember, your Children’s University passport can be stamped at Turanga Library.

This activity will be available online from 28th December 2025.
